Gesso

Once the underlying board is ready, it is covered with a fine cloth that is stuck on with natural rabbit skin glue.

A number of layers of high quality plaster (gesso) are then laid down.

In all, this process of gessoing involves up to twenty layers of glue and gesso laid down over a three day period.

Once the gesso is fully dry, it is sanded to a smooth surface.

Again, the same principles apply whatever the shape of the icon..
